2017 WINTER SOLSTICE to Benefit Victims and Witnesses of Crime in Baltimore City

The reality of becoming a victim of a crime is a harsh one. In addition to experiencing mental anguish, often times, victims encounter financial challenges as a result of the crime. While the Maryland Criminal Injuries Compensation Board provides financial assistance to cover major experiences such as funeral bills and lost wages, not all losses are covered. Additional funding for victim services generally comes from a variety of state and local resources, but can only be used to assist victims where criminal charges are pending against the perpetrator of the underlying crime. Often times, there is a gap in funding for victims in the immediate aftermath of a criminal incident where no charges have been filed. To help fill this gap, the Office of the State’s Attorney for Baltimore City maintains a Victims’ Emergency Fund to provide financial support for more immediate needs of the victim. The fund is available to victims of domestic violence, robbery, assaults, child abuse, and sexual assault; as well as families affected by homicide who meet the criteria. The fund covers expenses such as replacing broken windows and locks, stolen property, crime scene clean up, and medical treatment.   In order to continue to provide this type of assistance, the Office of the State's Attorney for Baltimore City must raise money to maintain this independent fund. To support these fundraising efforts, the office hosts the annual Winter Solstice Benefit. The funds raised through this initiative benefit the Victims’ Emergency Fund, which provides immediate assistance and support to victims of crime in Baltimore City. The Victims’ Emergency Fund provides assistance to victims in the immediate aftermath of a crime, regardless of whether the perpetrator has been arrested or charged with the crime against the victim.
